The Kromme Swim is a team event consisting of two members.  Team categories are:

Male, Female and Mixed. The minimum age for participation is 21.

Entries are limited to 75 teams.

A team prize will be given for the most original swim cap duo, so put your creative hats on and get ready for the most epic Kromme Descent to date!

Twelve years ago…close mates and keen open water swimmers Duncan Edwards and Kevin Richards, bored of swimming laps in pools or around buoys, had the idea to swim the navigable length of the beautiful Kromme River.

And so after scouting the river, checking its currents, finding its sandbanks, sussing out the nooks and crannies, watching the tide ebb and flow, in May 2013 they invited 12 swimmers to test the waters. Base camp was the Kromme River Lodge, with hosts Tienie and Phillip, an awesome couple, who’s ice-cream and malva pudding was the piece-de-resistance of their legendary hospitality.

In the early days swimmers were transported to the start by boat from the lodge, and before the start each swimmer would take a little warm-up swim to touch “Pete’s Rock” in memory of Pete Turner, a fellow open water swimmer who had sadly passed away a year before the first descent. And then it was “swimmers, start your… strokes” and off they went for Day 1.

Day 1 always ended with festivities at Tienie and Phillip’s. Legend has it that many a story, swimming and other, was drafted and crafted in that lodge late into the night, and with many a swimmer somehow voluntarily opting for the “hangover handicap” to start off Day 2.

The Kromme Descent, like the river, hasn’t stood still since. By year 2, there were 50 swimmers, and thereafter the numbers were soft-capped at a 100. Tienie and Phillip have since retired, and the base has moved to River Khaya. The whereabouts of the malva recipe unfortunately remain a close secret. In 2020 COVID-19 intervened to cancel the event, and emerging out of COVID in 2021, the Kromme Descent saw its first ever “ascent”, an upward swim ending at River Khaya on the second day.

Kevin, Duncan, and now the Swim Adventure team have constantly sought to try something slightly different, to keep it interesting, to make each Kromme Descent unique, while improving on safety and hospitality, to share their joy of its waters and to make it an awesome swim for each swimmer. Two constants do however remain: the Kromme, and that it’s the place of legends – both past and in the making.

So bring your A-game because this swim is not for feeble minded athletes, and remains our only event with a cutoff time. You have to be fit and confident about doing the distance, because the Kromme will throw her best at you on the day. You should be pool swimming 100m in 2min45 or faster, to successfully complete this race. See you at the start, it’s bound to be the most epic swim of the year!
